Mercado Del Puerto - HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

admin on Jan 1st 2007

Me and my sister decided to go to a beach house in Punta Del Este for a couple of days until the 31st of December, when we decided it would be best to come back to Montevideo and go to the Old Harbour, the Mercado Del Puerto. A family friend had made reservations at a resteraunt, Don Tiburon, for noon on the 31st so we could enjoy a fantastic lunch before the mayhem ensued.

That area has a drink called Medio y Medio (half & half), made from wine (either white or red) and champagne, a perfect combination that leaves the drink not too sweet and not too bitter. We ordered come seafood appetizers that included octapus, mussles, baby shrimps, jumbo shrimps and a delicious onion salsa. For entree we got a big meat dish that included picanha (a brazilian cut of meat), entrana (a uruguayan cut of meat), pork, and chicken. All in all, we drank about 10 liters of this exotic champagne and ran up a $3,600 peso bill for 6 people. At a P$24:U$1 exchange rate, $600 pesos per person comes out to be about $25 dollars. Not too bad for a shiek area that day of a huge gathering.

It was time for our family friend to leave, so I walked him to his car. All the 15-35 year olds get hammered and start dancing Samba and Candomble. Naturally, there were about 500 or so people there, not including the live congo drummers. We get to his BMW and the dumbass lost his keys! OH SNAP! We tried retracing our steps, but nothing. We go back and make a phone call, then he tells me “We better stay by the car in case someone finds the keys and tries to take it.” Low and behold, we go to a resteraunt and find that a waiter had found the keys and the lucky son of a bitch was able to go home.

I go back and end up dropping another 4 bottles with my cousins, then we all went into the melee that was the streets. Dancing samba, starting congo lines, and just having the time of our lives. A couple of hours later, our drunk asses needed to make it back home. We walked who knows how many kilometers to find a taxi, no one remembers quit how we FOUND the taxi, but hey, home sweet home is where we made it to!

We got in and started with another bottle of strawberry flavored champagne, still throwing it all over each other and having a good time. I picked up 3 liters of beer and went to my cousin’s house where my godson was. I threw 1 liter of beer over my cousins head, another over my godson’s head, and the last we enjoyed. We ended up picking up 2 more liters of Medio y Medio and another of beer. By the end of the 2nd bottle of Medio y Medio I was knocked out on his hard wood floor. My godson got up on the bed and poured the beer straight down my throat.

That is the last that I remember about that night. 5 hours later I woke up in a shower under running cold water. I had passed out, I was still drunk as shit, and we needed to go to my cousin’s house to have New Years Dinner. Someone dressed me, dunno who, and I can’t really tell you what I had for dinner that night. All I know is that midnight practically came and went, and that around 2 am my inebriation was finally coming to an end. We tried to look for somewhere to go dancing at, but by 4 am, we were all back home snoring in sweet sweet slumberland.
